Fourteen years ago I first experienced the healing effects...
Fourteen years ago I first experienced the healing effects of Christian Science. In one treatment I was completely cured of an organic trouble which I had had for twenty years, and which three operations and the constant care of a surgeon had failed to heal. I had been in bed for ten weeks suffering from an attack of ptomaine poisoning, which affected my heart in such a way that if I moved too suddenly I would faint away.
This would happen as often as three times during the day. There was hardly an hour that passed that I did not take medicine, but without healing effect. While I was in this condition a friend suggested that I try Christian Science. Many people are under the impression that one has to have faith to be healed. I did not have the faith, but was willing enough to try Christian Science as an experiment. Two hours after the treatment was given, I was entirely well. Dressing myself without the least feeling of weakness, I ate my first meal in ten weeks in the dining room, then walked four blocks to get a street car; changed cars twice before arriving at my destination, then found I had to walk up three flights of stairs. When I finally reached the top landing, the practitioner was there waiting for me. She remarked that I had really proved the statement in the fortieth chapter of Isaiah: "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." I have never fainted at any time since. I have had many wonderful healings. Rheumatism in various forms, quinsy, neuritis, tonsillitis that I used to have regularly in the fall of the year, and nervous headaches have been overcome, as well as fatigue that prevented me from doing things like other people.
I am deeply grateful for these manifestations of God's power. My healing has been the means of bringing each one of my family into the Christian Science church. It is a great privilege to be able to bring joy and peace through the understanding of Christian Science to those who have no hope; and I can never be thankful enough to our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, who has taught us that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 494).— (Mrs.) Mary W. Hemphill, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
