Seeing the report of Dr. Louis Roth's talk to University Club...

Daily Herald

Seeing the report of Dr. Louis Roth's talk to University Club members at the Y. M. H. A. meeting, in your valued paper, I want to thank the doctor for some of the good points he made in his address and to ask space for the purpose of correcting some misleading statements. In reply to the assertion made by this speaker that Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, is the "author of its Bible," I want to say that Mrs. Eddy is the author of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the Christian Science textbook. This book in no wise takes the place of the Bible, nor is it called the Christian Scientists' Bible. All Christian Scientists use the Bible, and in all Christian Science churches and societies the King James Version of it is used, in connection with the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health. This is the same Bible that is used by all Protestant denominations. Mrs. Eddy says in the above-mentioned textbook, on page 107, "In the year 1866, I discovered the Christ Science or divine laws of Life, Truth, and Love, and named my discovery Christian Science." At this period Mrs. Eddy was more than in her "teens," for she was born in Bow, New Hampshire, in the year 1821.

The Bible tells us that God is Spirit, and that God made everything that was made and pronounced it good. Therefore, that which is not of God, or like Him, He did not make; consequently, it has no true existence or eternality. From this basis it may be seen that sin, sickness, and death, not being of God, or sent or made by Him, are not real. The critic states that Mrs. Eddy does not define "mortal mind;" but by referring to Science and Health, pages 591 and 592, he will find a definition of "mortal mind." She also likens it to the "carnal mind," which Paul defines as "enmity against God." Mrs. Eddy also says on page 114 of the Christian Science textbook, "Usage classes both evil and good together as mind; therefore, to be understood, the author calls sick and sinful humanity mortal mind,—meaning by this term the flesh opposed to Spirit, the human mind and evil in contradistinction to the divine Mind, or Truth and good." Christian Science teaches that Mind and matter can no more mix than can fire and frost; that God is the Soul of man, and that Soul, God, cannot be confined in matter. The doctor also raises the old question as to the origin of evil. Mrs. Eddy, in an article entitled "Origin of Evil" in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 346), states, among other things, "Evil never did exist as an entity. It is but a belief that there is an opposite intelligence to God." The application of Christian Science does effectually heal, so that the appearance and sensation of disease disappear from the so-called human mind; and this is done in the manner taught by Jesus the Christ, who healed the sick and reformed the sinner in the most effectual manner.
