I did not come to Christian Science for physical healing

I did not come to Christian Science for physical healing. I had been an earnest searcher for truth in religion and philosophy, but had found no abiding satisfaction therein. While living in New York city I was invited to attend a lecture on Christian Science, and to my great surprise I found there in one hour that for which I had been searching for years. The speaker's analysis of so-called material science and his convincing statements as to the unsubstantial nature of matter met my questions, healed my troubled thought, and made clear to me that in reality there is no real material science.

Could it be possible, I thought, that in one evening I had found the chart of life? I was sadly in need of it, so I purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and began to read. I was not disappointed. I found in this book, not long arguments based on material or semi-material premises, but a complete and demonstrable statement of God and of man's relationship to Him. Hope and expectation filled my heart when I began to see that Truth is revealed in Christian Science, and that "Truth is God's remedy for error of every kind" (Science and Health, pp. 142, 143). In the years that have elapsed since then, I have had many opportunities to prove for myself its healing efficacy, and have found great joy and gratitude in helping others to do the same.

I should like to tell of an instantaneous healing that came to me about a year after I became thus interested. The healing took place through the reading of a passage in Science and Health. A very disturbing condition had been developing for some time as a result of inactivity of the bowels, from which I had suffered since childhood. This condition was accompanied by an intense fear of a so-called incurable disease which was known to have been in my family. I studied the Christian Science textbook diligently and tried to realize the truth for myself, but with little improvement. Many times I felt impelled to ask for help, but the thought of speaking aloud the name of the disease made me fearful and kept me silent. I was finally obliged to call on a practitioner for help. When I told him about the trouble, I emphasized the fact that the mental argument going on in my consciousness was much more distressing than the pain itself. He opened Science and Health to page 417, where Mrs. Eddy writes: "When you silence the witness against your plea, you destroy the evidence, for the disease disappears. The evidence before the corporeal senses is not the Science of immortal man." My thought lifted instantly, and I knew that I was healed. I went home feeling so thankful to our dear Leader, whose great love for mankind led her to the discovery of this healing truth, and grateful to the practitioner, whose knowledge of the textbook enabled him to open to the passage that silenced the false witness and helped me to see the nothingness of the difficulty so quickly. For several days the argument would occasionally assert itself, but I soon came to see clearly and effectively that if all space is filled with divine Love, there can be no place for a false witness.
