Love Which Fulfills the Law

That the law of Christian Science demands love for its fulfillment, Mrs. Eddy assures us, for love alone can meet the requirements of divine necessity, the will of God. "Love fulfils the law of Christian Science," writes our Leader in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 572), "and nothing short of this divine Principle, understood and demonstrated, can ever furnish the vision of the Apocalypse, open the seven seals of error with Truth, or uncover the myriad illusions of sin, sickness, and death." Thus did our Leader make it quite plain that Love alone enabled John so to rise above material sense as to envision the heavenly state; to attain to the atmosphere of Soul, into which the erroneous beliefs of life and intelligence in matter can never enter; to understand that divine Mind alone is the revelator of the nothingness of error, sealed in "seven seals" by the seeming forces of evil.

Love which is cognizant only of God's infinite presence and of man's perfection eliminates and destroys every falsity calling itself sin or sickness, and nullifies even death itself. How assured do we become in the face of such evidence as Christian Science offers, that Love is the only liberator from every binding belief; from every material law with which mortals have enslaved themselves! Love alone fulfills the law. The disciple beloved of the Master above all his associates emphasized the necessity of manifesting love in all our human relations. How simply and withal how forcibly does he put it: "He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love"! If there be any who fail to cherish love in their hearts for their fellow-men whom they have seen, they know not God. They have no sense of fellowship with Him who is infinite Love.

John's importunate appeal to otiose humanity fell for the most part on deaf ears. There were some, however, receptive of the heavenly message, who cherished it in their hearts and thus gained a zeal for service to mankind—the zeal which found its purpose in the establishment of Christianity. In the great tribulations which some of them underwent so triumphantly is found evidence attesting the depth of the love which inspired the early Christian fathers. In such love was indeed the fulfilling of the law. No other who has lived on the earth has manifested such love for his fellow-men, love measured by sacrifice, as the gentle Nazarene. None other, to enable mortals to behold and believe that God is the all-loving Father, has undergone such agony as he. None ever so successfully rebuked and overcame evil in its every phase as he, with his incomparable understanding of the power of divine Love.
