In the year 1910 the subject of Christian Science was brought to my notice for the first time. I was not deeply interested in the brief descriptions of its teachings at that time, but very shortly afterwards I was able to test its claims in a most remarkable manner. I was then training very assiduously for bicycle racing, and suddenly developed what seemed to be a stubborn trouble of the heart. I consulted a specialist, who said there was not very much the matter and that I should take things easier for a while. However, the more I thought of the complaint the worse it got, and for several months I hardly ever slept at night.
During this time I looked into most religions without getting any comfort; but fortunately I began, for the first time in my life, to read the Bible. The simplicity and beauty of Jesus' message immediately brought comfort to my consciousness, and I have always felt that when a few days afterwards I unexpectedly saw a Christian Science Reading Room and accepted its kind invitation to enter, it was God's loving answer to my despairing cry for help. I can never forget the welcome I got in that Reading Room. One there who seemed devoid of fear told me that "God is right here to meet your every need."
After reading the Preface and the chapter on Prayer in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I knew that truth had begun to heal me. I learned in my own experience during the next few months that as my understanding of the nature of God increased, my fears diminished. And then the physical trouble ceased in the same degree. Here was the wonderful discovery of Mrs. Eddy being demonstrated in my own experience, that although there seemed to be mental and physical trouble, in actual fact there was only mental trouble. As my mentality responded even a little to the laws of God, divine Mind, there was a corresponding diminution of physical suffering. Mrs. Eddy tells us on page 40 of Science and Health, "Remove error from thought, and it will not appear in effect."
