When a doctor discussed vaccination in your recent issue, he spoke of "religion as a reason why some persons refuse vaccination." If he had Christian Science in mind in this reference, may I have space for a brief reply? Christian Scientists oppose vaccination because they have found that obedience to the spiritual teachings of the Bible is a more reliable preventive than inoculation. Reasoning logically from the premises that "God is love," and that God's works are good, Christian Scientists conclude that the loving God did not make smallpox, nor any form of evil. They understand that if they are obedient to God's requirements, they need not fear disease; and that by having the Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus," they can heal disease as Jesus commanded and in the same way as he did.

In the twenty-fourth chapter of II Samuel, the Bible relates how David worshiped the true God, "and the plague was stayed from Israel." This is in harmony with the ninetyfirst psalm, which says, "Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling."

Christian Scientists are not the only people opposed to vaccination. Many individuals of different schools of medicine are unwilling to submit to the process; and many reputable physicians are against vaccination, because they have found that it is not a real protection against disease. Throughout the ages, the spiritually-minded have enjoyed the protection of the loving God, and no other guard has ever been found so safe and sure.
