In July, 1915, I became ill from overwork and grief

In July, 1915, I became ill from overwork and grief. A very dear relative passed on, and I thought I could never be happy again without that companionship. I worried about this separation until one day while at my work I fell in a swoon. The manager lovingly sent me home in a taxi, telling me not to report for duty until I had taken a good rest, saying also that my position would be open for me whenever I was able to resume my duties. I was under medical treatment until the fifteenth of August, and for several weeks before this experience at the office, and was getting weaker all the time.

On the above-mentioned date, the doctor told me he knew nothing more he could do for me, unless I would change my thought. As he was unable to tell me how to do that, I was very much discouraged. The same day I was talking with an old friend, who, although I did not know it, had been studying Christian Science for several years. I was very antagonistic to what I thought Christian Science taught. My friend asked me what I was doing for myself, and I told her the verdict of the morning. She then asked me if I would be willing to try Science. I did not understand that she had made reference to Christian Science, and asked her for treatment. She gave me a Sentinel and said that I might read it if I wanted to; so on the following morning I opened it to see what it was all about, and was horrified to learn that I had asked for Christian Science treatment. I thought that after a few days I would tell her to stop the work and so be through with Christian Science. However, I started reading the Sentinel, and soon was lost to everything but the wonderful truths expressed within its pages. My antagonism was gone, for I learned that Christian Science was very different from what I had understood it to be. After one week's treatment, what the doctor had pronounced typhoid malaria had vanished into its native nothingness. Since then I have had many healings and blessings. Just by reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, my eyes were healed, so that I unconsciously laid aside glasses that an aptician had told me I should always have to wear when using my eyes. Since then I have used my eyes more than ever before, and have not had any trouble with them.

In December, 1922, I turned my ankle, spraining it badly. The sprain was healed within two hours, but the sciatic nerve was injured, causing excruciating pain in the limb and hip for about nine days. At this time my relatives and some friends urged me to call in a physician and have the case diagnosed, and to allow him to give me something to ease the pain. I had no faith in a drug being powerful enough to do this; but as those with whom I was living were losing their rest, after much urging I gave my consent. When the doctor came I told him that I was a Christian Scientist and only called him in to have him tell me what he would name my trouble, and that if he could give me anything to deaden the pain I would soon be all right. He said he would have me sleeping in half an hour. After taking five doses of that medicine I was suffering more and just as wide-awake as ever. I felt that the only treatment which had any power to help me had been stopped, and asked my family to call a Christian Science practitioner in a near-by city. The practitioner came and stayed that night in the home, and for the first time in more than a week I slept all night, as did the rest of the family and also the practitioner after midnight. After this I had no more severe pain, although it was several weeks before I was entirely free. I am very grateful for this experience, as it was absolutely proved to me that there is no power in drugs, and also that I had lost all faith in their healing power, and that there is indeed no power but one, that is, God.
