In regard to the letter which appeared in the Sunday Journal...

Minneapolis Journal

In regard to the letter which appeared in the Sunday Journal under the caption "Acceptance of Truth and Guides to That Truth," I wish to state that the subject touched upon is not a matter of personal opinion. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy is there to be read and its truth tested; there is no desire to force it upon any one. Let me repeat that truth which is not truth for some people is an impossibility. Truth must by its very nature be universal. The fact that two times two equals four is universal and available to all. Yet when children first attend school they are not particularly interested in that fact, nor do they understand its usefulness. They are apt to be more interested in whether they can write a nice 2 or whether the little boy in the next seat is making a red 4 or a blue 4 on his slate. It usually takes a period of years to establish in the child a recognition of the scientific law of mathematics.

Much of the so-called discussion of Christian Science concerns itself with nonessentials. It remains in the realm of red 4's and blue 4's, never discerning the scientific Principle (God), yet feeling competent to discuss that which it has never put to the test. To those who understand Christian Science it is clear that it has nothing in common with intellectual discussion, nor does it consist of mental gymnastics. Its textbook is a profound and scientific exposition of the Science of Being, and to those approaching it with the desire for enlightenment, as they would approach any other scientific study, complying with its conditions, it becomes available and demonstrable. Such an individual would begin to prove the truth and efficacy of Christian Science, and it would then be possible for him to understand, as never before, that he had taken "reason, philosophy, reflection, and experimentation as his guide to truth."
