The Sculptor and His Model

Plying his chisel and his hammer, the sculptor chips away the rough edges of his marble deftly, patiently, and persistently, until the rugged stone takes the form present in the sculptor's thought, the manifested mental image he has been entertaining seeming to come out from within the marble. One's life resembles a block of marble in the workshop of a sculptor. The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, says in "The People's Idea of God" (p. 7): "We are all sculptors, working out our own ideals, and leaving the impress of mind on the body as well as on history and marble, chiselling to higher excellence, or leaving to rot and ruin the mind's ideals. Recognizing this as we ought, we shall turn often from marble to model, from matter to Mind, to beautify and exalt our lives."

The first essential for the expression of perfect art by the sculptor is a perfect model. The sculptor looks carefully at his model; then he chips away at the marble till the rough edges give place to outline, and outline to perfected form. Likewise, the Christian Scientist must ever keep the perfect model in his thought if he wishes to approach in his own life the example of Jesus the Christ. Nowhere but in the realm of Truth will he find "the immortal and perfect model of God's creation," of which Mrs. Eddy speaks in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 260). If he contemplates the Christ-life, the model found in divine Mind, and then takes up the tools of love and understanding, he will soon see the rough edges of ignorance, unkindness, criticism, doubt, and fear fall away, and he will find himself manifesting those qualities inherent in his model.

It has been said that true education is merely the removal of ignorance so that intelligence may shine forth. Intelligence cannot be added to the real man, who already reflects in fullness the one infinite Mind, God. The parallel is true for any demonstration in Christian Science of the spiritual man's ever present health, joy, happiness, and prosperity. Demonstration is the destruction of the encumbering beliefs in the reality of sin and sickness, and the expression of the man of God's creation, the manifestation of the kingdom of heaven, which Jesus said was within.
