When I was a child I was subject to frequent attacks of malarial fever. As I grew older this malarial condition became chronic. I struggled on for many years searching for health, but could not find it. Finally there came a time when I seemed to be in such a nervous condition that my family and friends were considerably alarmed. The doctors by this time did not agree in their diagnoses, some still thinking the cause malaria, some that it was the after effects of grippe, and one, intestinal indigestion. In my desperation I said to a friend, "What must I do?" She advised me to try Christian Science, stating that she did not know much about it. but she knew some one it had helped.
I knew nothing about Christian Science, but I wanted to get well and was willing to do anything; so I made an appointment with a Christian Science practitioner for the next day. When I left the practitioner's home I had promised to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and to attend the church services if I felt able to do so. Also, I had agreed to discontinue all medical treatment. I went home and threw away all the medicines I had: one, a nerve tonic taken every half hour from noon until bedtime; another, sleeping tablets which I kept by my bed continually. From that day to this, some eight or nine years, I have not had any treatment other than Christian Science. I have grown steadily better during the years; for the healing has never stopped. Sin, as well as sickness, has given way under Christian Science treatment and study. Joy and peace have come in the place of worry and confusion. My old friends still marvel at the change which has taken place.
There was a time during my teaching career when my associates would often ask me what I was mad about, I looked so cross; and I would be surprised, because I did not know I looked so. Now it is very common for them to ask why I am so happy. Many of them say I must have the easiest work in the school to do, because I am not heard complaining and seem so happy. This change is entirely due to the regeneration going on in me through the study of Christian Science.
