About eleven years ago I began to read the Christian Science...
About eleven years ago I began to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, more to please some relatives who had become students of this Science than from any hope of being healed physically. At that time I had been suffering for over fourteen years from a severe form of eczema, which often kept me confined to the house for weeks at a time, and effectually prevented me from doing any work outside of my own home. I had been to medical men for this trouble, for several years being under the care of a noted London specialist for skin diseases, and had also tried many remedies, but without gaining any relief, the attacks simply becoming more acute and of longer duration.
When I began the study of Christian Science and to have Christian Science help, I was quite hopeless of ever being healed; and as I had practically no knowledge of the teachings of Christian Science, I did not expect it to do any good, but thought it could do no harm. For many weeks I seemed to gain no understanding at all, but felt obliged to go on reading. After reading for several hours one evening, I shut the book, feeling it was useless to try to understand it, and went upstairs for the night. About half an hour later the truth of the teaching came quite suddenly to me. I realized that God is the only creator; that man is His image and likeness, and that all that He made is good; therefore, that I could only reflect perfection. From that time I knew that I could be healed. I had many struggles before the trouble was completely overcome; but gradually the healing truth did its work, and that and many other physical ills left me. About two years later the same difficulty tried to return, but with the loving help of a Christian Science practitioner it was completely overcome in a few weeks; and for the enlarged understanding of God and of man's unity with Him gained during this testing time, I cannot be grateful enough. Among the other ailments healed through Christian Science were anaemia, indigestion, rheumatism, and insomnia.
For physical healing I am indeed most grateful; but for the spiritual enlightenment, the revelation of the Bible, and the understanding of God, words are inadequate to express my thanks. Christian Science has made God a reality to me, has given a new meaning to life, and is the source of all my happiness and prosperity. I am very grateful to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, whose purity and self-sacrificing life enabled her to reveal this blessing to mankind, and to all those who have lovingly helped me along the way. I hope that this testimony may help others to persevere even when to material sense things look as hopeless as they seemed in my case, and thus be led to find the "pearl of great price."—(Miss) Marion Gertrude Simmons, Cambride, Massachusetts.
