The Power of a Right Thought

In "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 9) Mrs. Eddy has written, "The spiritual power of a scientific, right thought, without a direct effort, an audible or even a mental argument, has oftentimes healed inveterate diseases." Our Leader must have gained the understanding whereby she could make this statement from the many proofs of its truth in her own rich demonstrations. None could know better than did she that every good and perfect thought is "from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." No one since Jesus' time has proved so completely as she the power which must invariably accompany the acceptance and understanding of this truth.

To the Christian Scientist to-day there can be no higher goal than this which our Leader has so plainly and with such deep conviction presented to us—this ability to heal the sick instantaneously through spiritual thought. We may find again and again statements she has given emphasizing this power. For instance, on page 252 of "Miscellaneous Writings" she tells us, "Good thoughts are potent; evil thoughts are impotent, and they should appear thus." We find all through her books the constant assurance that a right thought can always accomplish the overthrow of a wrong one; for a wrong thought, a wrong concept, is all there is to any error. Then the question naturally follows: Why do Christian Scientists ever fail to avail themselves of this almighty power for good?

The Christian Scientist always endeavors to give all glory to God. He desires above all else to acknowledge God as the one and only Mind, and he is constantly praying that he may prove his own unity with this perfect Mind in all things and at all times. It is a very simple logic which starts with the perfect premise that since God is infinite intelligence, perfect, all-powerful, divine Mind, all true thoughts must originate in this Mind, must ever remain in Mind, must express all the power and perfection of Mind, must ever be under the control of Mind. Hence any thought of divine Mind must be endued with God's own power to demonstrate the unreality, the nothingness, of any supposititious opposite. To realize, therefore, that any thought of God must necessarily express infinite power is to have an invincible weapon wherewith to overcome the claims of evil.
