In a recent issue of the Times a report of an interview gives a certain lady's opinions on certain subjects. As regards Mrs. Eddy's teaching, her opinion is quite erroneous; and I shall be glad of space for a correction. Mrs. Eddy teaches, as does the Bible, that "God is a Spirit;" that, being infinite, there can be but one Spirit; and that man in God's image and likeness is spiritual, but not a spirit. While recognizing the real man as spiritual, Christian Science does not ignore the body as such; and in her book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," on page 114, Mrs. Eddy describes matter, which includes the body, as "the subjective state of what is termed by the author mortal mind." The fact that the body appears real to the physical senses is certainly not ignored by Christian Scientists in their daily practice of overcoming the ills of the flesh by the spiritual realization of what man is, as God made and sustains him. Of course, any one who believes in spiritism in any degree must disapprove of Christian Science, since these are entirely opposed to each other, as is shown in the chapter entitled "Christian Science versus Spiritualism" in the book previously mentioned.
