"What is truth?"

The question which Pilate propounded to our Master, "What is truth?" was an important one at that time, and is still of great importance to sick and sinning humanity. For did not Jesus say, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free"? Is it to be wondered at that thinking people everywhere are asking this same question to-day?

It becomes evident, in our first analysis of the question, that Truth is something that can be relied upon, something that can be depended on, now and always. Truth includes the absolutely true state of things, the real spiritual facts, because it is the unchanging Principle, never temporal, but "the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever." It is clear, therefore, that in seeking an answer to Pilate's question we must first seek to gain an understanding of the infinite One, the Supreme Being, in order that we may obey our Master's injunction. And if we are ever to learn what Truth is, we must learn of God; for God is Truth.

The question "What is truth?" is answered in the Bible and in the writings of Mary Baker Eddy; and any earnest student may find the answer there. But in order to gain an understanding of Truth, the study of the above-named books must be a consecrated one, and the light derived from the study must be utilized constantly in daily experience. All of the truth is not gained at once. Mrs. Eddy says in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 449), "A grain of Christian Science does wonders for mortals, so omnipotent is Truth, but more of Christian Science must be gained in order to continue in well doing." The understanding of Truth which we possess to-day may not be sufficient to meet our needs to-morrow. But "progress is the law of God" (ibid., p. 233); and progress calls for greater reliance on Truth day by day.
