I have long felt that I should bear witness to the many...
I have long felt that I should bear witness to the many blessings of which I have been the recipient through Christian Science, as brought to light in this age by the omnipotence of divine Love and the purity and faithfulness of Love's messenger, Mary Baker Eddy.
From the age of about twelve years I was the victim of the disease known as epilepsy, seemingly brought on by an accidental blow on the head received while at play a year or two previously. The local physician did all in his power to alleviate the trouble, but constant taking of the prescribed remedy (bromides in various forms) seemed to have no effect but to throw me into an ever deeper depression. I lived in fear of the attacks coming on, and was a positive burden to my mother and elder sister, whose loving care and self-sacrifice through the years that followed I shall never forget. Finally I asked my parents to let me stop taking the drugs, as it was obvious they were of no use. Then the attacks became less frequent, though they still came on at intervals, and I was still suffering from the morbid self-consciousness and depression that often accompany this disease.
However, at the time of the outbreak of the war I seemed to be fairly free, and so I insisted on enlisting. Once I was discharged on account of the old trouble, but enlisted again in about two months, and in due course went to the front in France. During the time I was at the front, about twelve months, the epileptic attacks began to come on worse than ever, and in the end resulted in my being sent home to England. On my discharge from army service, about the middle of 1919, although I was not having the attacks very often, I was in a morbid, miserable condition, slow and incapable, in constant dread of the disease, with no settled vocation in life. I smoked very heavily, and indulged in intoxicants in the effort to soothe myself.
