A physician recently contributed to your paper an article of considerable length and of some interest regarding the effect of psychotherapy in treating disease. His emphasis on the value of encouraging rather than depressing the sick man is helpful. Not having practiced or demonstrated Christian Science, manifestly the doctor is incompetent to speak authoritatively thereon, and displays an unwise temerity in introducing the subject into his article. He states: "That so-called Christian Science has accomplished numbers of cures is undeniable, but such cures have only been possible in cases where the mental healing has been accompanied by sound, sane medical and hygienic treatment." The doctor's contention that Christian Science healing is successful only when "accompanied by sound, sane medical and hygienic treatment" not only discloses a misconception of Christian Science, but reveals a startling misapprehension of the healing ministry of Christ Jesus, who healed inveterate diseases by spiritual means alone. Testimonies appearing in the Christian Science periodicals and given in Christian Science churches throughout the world prove conclusively to honest investigators that Christian Science heals disease, both functional and organic, which had been pronounced incurable by the various material systems. Further, in direct contradiction to the doctor's statement, it has been found that until the patient was ready to dispense with all material means, he derived little or no aid from Christian Science. All students of Christian Science capable of demonstrating its teachings are keenly aware that any attempt to aid or support Christian Science treatment with material remedies neutralizes the efficacy of the treatment, and becomes an insuperable obstruction to the healing.
Christ Jesus, the great Logician, speaking for all time, said, "No man can serve two masters." Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, on page 160 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" writes, "The systems of physics act against metaphysics, and vice versa." Every student of Christian Science who is able to demonstrate its teachings has proved the correctness of the foregoing statements.
