"Thy kingdom come"

The meaning of each By-law in the Manual of The Mother Church unfolds as Christian Scientists endeavor to understand and practice the rules of the Manual. On page 41 we have a By-law which will never cease to unfold new beauties to those who daily observe it. This By-law, which is entitled "Daily Prayer," reads: "It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to pray each day: 'Thy kingdom come;' let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin; and may Thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind, and govern them!"

Christians everywhere pray earnestly for the establishment of the kingdom of God on earth. Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, has given us definite rules by which this great task may be, is being, accomplished. In the illuminating chapter on Prayer, in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy says (p. 1), "Desire is prayer;" and she adds (p. 2), "The desire which goes forth hungering after righteousness is blessed of our Father, and it does not return unto us void."

In "Miscellaneous Writings" (pp. 211, 212) our Leader says that the Master "lived the spirit of his prayer,—'Thy kingdom come;'" and she further says, "Shall we repeat our Lord's prayer when the heart denies it, refuses to bear the cross and to fulfil the conditions of our petition?"
