The Consciousness of Love
All through the Scriptures we are assured that God cares for His children; and in I John we read that "God is love." But the belief in evil has seemed so strong that it has been generally accepted as part of God's creation, or at least as permitted by Him for inscrutable reasons of His own. Evil is even supposed to have been visited by Him upon His own children for their good, thus producing a tangle of good and evil apparently impossible to unravel. The belief that good produces evil and that out of evil comes good, would claim to taint life at its very source and result in utter confusion.
In spite of the teachings of Jesus the Christ on the allness of good and the falsity of evil, the human mind, so called, has continued to attribute a knowledge of evil to God, in order to account to itself for its own false sense of things. When Mrs. Eddy, however, reiterated the fact that God is "of purer eyes than to behold evil," and cannot "look on iniquity," and proved it to be scientifically correct by healing on the basis of God's perfection, great was the shock to self-satisfied human theories. But the moment human reason yields to divine revelation how logical Mrs. Eddy's proposition is seen to be! We feel like saying, Why, of course! How stupid not to have seen it before! Stupid indeed; but as she herself tells us, it is necessary to "break earth's stupid rest" (Poems, p. 14), before the truth of being can reach the dull ears of mortals.
Since God is Love, and man is the image of Love, he can in reality be conscious only of Love, never of its suppositional opposite. In the same way, the other six synonyms for God—"Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 465)—are reflected by the real man, who has no consciousness of their illusive opposites. When the lies of evil beset mortals, it is the consciousness of Love as omnipresent which clears away the cobwebs in which we seem enmeshed. When the human heart cries out in anguish, it is the blessed thought that God is Love that is the great deliverer. Since God is Love, and God is infinite, then Love is infinite; Love must therefore fill all space, and must be manifested through every least idea of divine Mind! Where, then, is there room for evil to lurk? And what is there to give evil activity?
