Our Manual

At the present stage of development of the Christian Science movement, we cannot speak or write too frequently of our beloved Church Manual and its inestimable value to the Cause of Christian Science; for nothing can take its place in the conduct of our church government. The Manual is a compendium of ideal government; and every Christian Scientist should endeavor to assimilate its contents and to obey it in its entirety. It should be used in connection with all his daily affairs.

If the Church Manual could be abrogated, the Church of Christ, Scientist, would undergo disorganization. It has passed, however, through a Red Sea of trial and has proved itself impregnable. Such an experience should awaken every Christian Scientist to the fact that, as Mrs. Eddy says in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 230), "Eternity awaits our Church Manual"—a definite statement by Mrs. Eddy herself. It goes without saying that had Mrs. Eddy had any thought that the Manual would cease to function should she depart, she would have made some provision to that end.

All adherents of Christian Science need to keep awake to the importance of reading, studying, and obeying the rules of the Manual. One who had been interested in Christian Science a long time and had received much help therefrom did not even know that Christian Science had a church until attention was called to the Manual. A copy was obtained by her, and a zealous desire for membership resulted.
