Spiritual Resources Unlimited

It soon becomes evident to the conscientious student of the Bible, the student whose spiritual understanding has been enlightened through Christian Science, that many in the past have believed that God is able to supply, and does supply, the needs of mankind. Throughout its pages are to be found numerous statements which bear out the fact. For example, in the twenty-third psalm the words occur, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." In the sixth chapter of Matthew is the saying of Jesus, "Your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him." And James writes in his epistle: "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." Each of these sayings is replete with faith in God as the source from which all good is supplied to meet every human need.

The great demonstrator of the unlimited resources of Spirit was Christ Jesus, who drew upon these resources time and time again while he sojourned on earth, revealing to mankind the truth about the Father's kingdom. Did not he heal numerous diseases through his knowledge of Spirit's power? Did not he destroy many sinful beliefs in the same way? Were not the waves of the storm-tossed sea similarly subject to him and put to rest? Were not the five thousand fed by him in "a desert place," when to human sense there were only five loaves and two fishes to meet the need? All these things occurred as they are chronicled in the four Gospels of the New Testament; and they constitute the most glowing record in all history of the power of spiritual understanding to supply the needs—the sore needs in many cases—of the children of men.

Sometimes it is argued that although Christ Jesus could draw on the unlimited resources of Spirit as he did, it should not be inferred that others may do the same. But the express object the Master had in view during his ministry on earth, was so to instruct his fellow-men regarding the nature of God that they should be able to pray to God as he did, and have their prayers answered as his were answered. On page 494 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes, "It is not well to imagine that Jesus demonstrated the divine power to heal only for a select number or for a limited period of time, since to all mankind and in every hour, divine Love supplies all good." Jesus was our great Exemplar. If we fail to achieve the results he obtained, it is not because they are impossible of achievement, but owing to lack of spiritual understanding on our part.
