In 1901 my third baby was born, and to mortal sense...
In 1901 my third baby was born, and to mortal sense both of us had a very hard struggle for life. When he was about a month old a Christian Scientist called on us one day. I told her of the serious time we had had, and she began to talk to me of the truth. I was so sure that I knew the baby was sick that her words made me angry; and she then saw I was not ready for her message of freedom from bondage to material sense, so said no more.
About nine months later I had my trunks at the depot to make a trip East to visit my people when my second eldest boy became suddenly ill with a high fever. I was very much discouraged and knew I could not make the trip with him sick. While I was worrying over the matter, something seemed to tell me to take him across the street to the lady who had called before. This I did, and she lovingly told me that everything would be all right; that perhaps I had been overanxious to make that trip, whether it pleased all concerned or not. She led me into a quiet room and sat in silent prayer for a few minutes and then told me to take the boy home, give him his bath, and put him to bed, and then go to bed myself and get my rest, as I would need it to make the journey with those three who were almost babies. I obeyed her command entirely and just left the child in God's care. The healing was instantaneous. I made my trip, and all went well. I realized in a measure that it was the power of God that did the work; but, like many others, before coming into Christian Science I did not know God aright.
Time went on until June, 1903. I had been in very poor health for four months, unable most of the time to remain on my feet for more than a few minutes at a time. I was nauseated constantly, had bad spells with my heart, and varicose veins bothered me until I was so discouraged I did not know what to do. Our doctor offered me no relief, so once again I thought of the lady who had helped me out of my trouble so quickly before. I wrote to her and told her my troubles. She immediately took up work for me in Christian Science, and I as quickly reaped the benefit. I was not sick another hour from the time she received my letter. Then, as before, I felt that God had healed me; but as I did not have a Bible in my home, I could not read and study the beautiful ninety-first psalm this lady told me about, nor did I buy the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
