Although about ten years of my childhood were spent...
Although about ten years of my childhood were spent in a home where the evils of drink had unfitted the head of the family, resulting in the loss of large business interests; still, when I started out in the theatrical profession a few years later, I became a slave to drink and its terrible results throughout a period of many years. After each experience I would solemnly resolve to lead a true life, most earnestly pleading with God to help me. Notwithstanding, the periods of drinking became more and more frequent, until the effects required critical surgical operations, attended with the awful fear of death.
When a Christian Science Sentinel was presented to me, I literally devoured every word, especially the testimonies of healing, so sure was I of the truth contained therein. I found myself healed, and purchased Mrs. Eddy's books. This healing, experienced in the summer of 1908, included complete freedom from the smoking habit of more than twenty years. An idea of the physical rejuvenation which has come to me through the study of Christian Science may be gained from the fact that in May, 1923, at the age of fifty-eight, I screened for a moving picture company as a boy of twenty-two.
Very shortly after my own healing an old friend, pronounced by hospital authorities to have not more than eight or ten days to live with the ravages of cancer, experienced the same proof of God's omnipotent love. Seeing the unbelievable change wrought in me, and inspired by my boundless faith and gratitude, he took the train to obtain the services of a practitioner in the city of New York. His healing was realized within three weeks, and when I saw him a few days later he was praising and glorifying God like the impotent man outside of the gate called Beautiful, who had been healed.
