[Written for the Sentinel]

Broken Bonds

Oh , let us, like Paul and Silas,
In the prison sing;
In the depths of fear and darkness
Make the earth walls ring!
Let us sing, though pride doth tempt us
Saying, Why should we
Have so deep and dark a problem
And such misery?

Oh, remember how at midnight,
In the dungeon cold,
Those disciples praised their Maker
For His love untold!
And the prisoners, dull with slumber,
Heard and raised them up;
And their hearts within them wondered
At the words of hope.
Lo, the walls by earthquake shaken
Crumbled instantly,
And the chains that bound them loosened—
Love had made them free.
