Christian Science came into my life about eight years...
Christian Science came into my life about eight years ago, at a time when I was utterly discouraged, heartsick, and weary, longing for death to relieve me of my misery. At that time I had been given up by doctors and a specialist, and seemingly had but a short time to live. For years I had experienced acute stomach trouble and, as it seemed, almost everything else it was possible for any one to have, accompanied by several nervous breakdowns. The only reason I escaped several operations was because no two doctors could ever agree just what to operate for, and, as I had a dreadful horror of operations, I was spared this further trouble. I had eaten very sparingly for years, and had not slept a single night for years without the use of an opiate. I was so weakened by all this that I had wasted to almost a shadow and had great difficulty in moving around at all. The nervousness at all times was so intense that towards the last I feared I would become insane.
One day about this time, when everything seemed particularly aggravated, the words "Christian Science" came to me just as clearly as though some one had spoken them. I experienced this a number of times within the next few days, thus proving that "man's extremity is God's opportunity." I kept thinking about the words "Christian Science" continually; and when, about a week later, the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and a Christian Science Quarterly were handed to me, I grasped them eagerly; for I instinctively felt that this was what I needed and that help had come to me at last.
I started at once to read and study the Lesson-Sermon, and through this study alone my healing was completed. All medicine, including the opiate, was discarded from the first; and I shall never forget the night of my very first day's reading, when I retired and slept like a child. My healing took several months. It is impossible to find words to express the joy and peace that came to me from the first, and also the happiness as I saw each false belief fade into its native nothingness. About six months after taking up the study of Christian Science it seemed best to consult a Christian Science practitioner. The difficulty was Bright's disease, with the thought of heredity, every one on my father's side of the family having passed on with this disease. At the end of two weeks' treatment I was entirely healed.
