The Church of Christ, Scientist

In the historical sketch which is the foreword of the Manual of The Mother Church (p. 19), The First Church of Christ, Scientist, is described as being designed "to reflect in some degree the Church Universal and Triumphant." That The Mother Church is fulfilling this description is becoming more apparent year by year. Its activities have become universal, and now the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and the other writings of Mary Baker Eddy are known throughout the world. To the extent that Christian healing has been restored and the omnipotence of God and the activity of His spiritual law have been made manifest, this church has become the church triumphant.

The reason for this lies in the fact that Christian Science in bringing to the world a spiritual understanding of God has brought also a new concept of Church and its purposes.

In Science and Health (p. 583) Mary Baker Eddy defines "Church" in part as follows: "The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick."
