Losing Sight of False Selfhood

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 316) Mrs. Eddy has written, "The real man being linked by Science to his Maker, mortals need only turn from sin and lose sight of mortal selfhood to find Christ, the real man and his relation to God, and to recognize the divine sonship." This tremendously comprehensive statement of our beloved Leader contains the promise of all of heaven to all mankind here and now. Here is shown the way out of all that is false and tormenting into the complete and eternal bliss which awaits all who will but let go of the material and lay hold of the spiritual sense of existence.

The choice between knowing one's self as the child of God, or of coming under Jesus' stinging pronouncement, "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do," would seem to offer a clear enough demarcation between the true and the false, between the desirable and the undesirable, for all to hasten to claim their royal sonship at any expense to the belief in a false selfhood; and is not this the choice all are being constantly called upon to make in all that they think and say and do?

It is self-evident that to lose sight of anything one must stop looking at it, must cease considering or thinking about it. This is, however, on the negative side of the question, and few have ever been able to accomplish much in the dethronement of any wrong by a process of mere "do not's" or "must not's." To attempt to put anything out of consciousness by a method of merely ignoring or trampling upon the object, or by using any other ordinary human process of getting rid of it, is generally only to replace one error with another, and so to fail ignobly in reducing evil.
