"Be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you," is part of a verse from the third chapter of I Peter, written on the flyleaf of a Bible and given me by my mother when I was about twenty. Though I had been reared in a religious family, the Bible had never been illumined in a sufficiently understandable way for me to gain any plausible reason why the discords of the world to-day should be overcome by studying its pages. It was, therefore, laid aside and forgotten.

After human belief had buffeted me about for several more years, I contracted a peculiar malady which two of the best physicians of a large western city could not satisfactorily diagnose or cure. After seven weeks in bed I decided to try Christian Science. I sent for a practitioner and was healed in one treatment. Eager to know more of this wonderful truth which had set me free, I purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and read it day and night. The longforgotten Bible was also brought forth and earnestly read, and I began to see not only a reason for hoping, but a basis for knowing that God is omnipotent and omniscient to-day.

For this healing I was extremely grateful, but far more so for the light it brought, revealing the truth that the real world is not one of conflicting powers or man a helpless victim, but that in proportion to our understanding we can face error of any kind without fear, knowing it to be but an illusion of false thinking. This revelation brought me an indescribable joy and a confidence in God which I had never before deemed possible.
