Signs of the Times

[From the Dereham and Fakenham Times, Norwich, Norfolk, England]

Preaching at the Primitive Methodist Church, the Rev. S. Walpole (superintendent minister) declared that Christ [Jesus] never made discipleship easy. If the kingdom of heaven was worth while, it was worth striving for. Too many people become Christians without counting the cost. Christianity was not a spasmodic sort of thing that a man could have to-day and lose to-morrow. The break with the old life must be complete, and the decision irrevocable. There was nothing like burning one's bridges behind one. If the decision was half and half, if there was a compromise, it would spoil the music of the Christian life. No man could serve God and mammon; and it was because so many people tried to do that, that they failed to get any joy out of religion.
