A Sermon in a Stone

The writer, being fond of flowers, each season finds much enjoyment and many profitable lessons while planting and tending her garden. One lesson which comes to thought frequently, always proving most helpful, she wishes to share.

At the proper time a certain plant pushed its way up through the earth, unfolding two small green shoots. A stone of considerable size lay directly in its path, threatening to retard growth and interfere with the proper development of the plant. This obstruction became firmly balanced between the shoots of the plant, and gradually was lifted a few inches above the ground. A law which knew naught of obstructive material forces governed and controlled the unfoldment of the plant, however, and in the very place where the stone rested a new growth began, which slowly but surely lifted the stone until one day it overbalanced and dropped, the new growth having forced it from its resting place. Dropping to the earth away from the upgrowing stock, the stone became no longer a hindrance. Of necessity, the little plant became sturdy, firmly and deeply rooted, and in due season put forth quantities of branches stronger and richer in blossom-bearing qualities than plants growing near, which had seemingly made less effort. But had the plant continued to be overburdened, had it not overcome the apparent obstacle, it would have been bowed to the earth and would never have reached unfoldment with fruitage.

In "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 1) Mrs. Eddy says, "The mounting sense gathers fresh forms and strange fire from the ashes of dissolving self, and drops the world." Then, shall mankind calmly accept or submit to the false claims of so-called material sense, with its accumulative obstructions of fear? Through right thinking and demonstrating the healing power of the Christ, Truth, as revealed by Christian Science, one may rise above the mortal sense of creation, above earth and earthy environments, and unfold in divine Love, wherein is no element of discord, no weight of erroneous belief to limit or obstruct.
