"If God be for us, who can be against us?"

The question which Paul addressed to the Christians at Rome, "If God be for us, who can be against us?" every Christian Scientist asks himself when difficulties seem to beset him. For has he not learned the truth of God's allness, and of the infinity of God's goodness, and in consequence that evil is unreal? Paul in those far-off days could put the question to those friends of his, "beloved of God, called to be saints," with a great assurance in his heart that God does protect all who love Him and obey His statutes; and those of us in these present days who understand something of Christian Science can ask it of ourselves, and answer it as positively as could the great apostle to the Gentiles.

Now Mrs. Eddy's discovery of the unreality of evil must be ranked among the greatest discoveries of the ages. Not only so, but her courage in making it known to the world stands unrivaled in human history; for it has to be remembered that when she first of all announced her discovery, the world was utterly incredulous of such a thing. Evil unreal! To make such a statement then was to incur almost certain ridicule. Even to-day, how many there are who scoff at the fact, forgetting that in so doing they are denying the truth that God is infinite good!

Mrs. Eddy gradually broke through the hard crust of fallacious human belief, establishing by demonstration the doctrine she taught. As soon as she perceived that since God is infinite good, evil must be unreal, she saw that it would be possible to destroy the seeming effects of evil by the mental process of affirming and realizing the truth of the allness of good, and denying the reality of evil and its seeming effects. And this, not in one direction only, but in every direction in which evil claimed to operate. In this way Mrs. Eddy healed sickness. She recognized that disease has always a mental origin, known or unknown to the sick one, that this mental origin is so-called mortal mind or the supposititious consciousness which believes in the reality, operation, and power of matter or evil; and with her understanding of reality she was able to destroy the false belief which apparently externalized itself in the form of disease. And so Mrs. Eddy established Christian Science on a scientific basis, that of the allness of God, good, and the unreality of evil, in accordance with her own words in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 480): "Evil is a false belief. God is not its author. The supposititious parent of evil is a lie."
