Man's Unity With God

In a wonderfully illuminating chapter, "Atonement and Eucharist," in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy elaborates the theme which Christ Jesus demonstrated, as well as taught, namely, man's unity with God. On page 18 she writes, "Jesus of Nazareth taught and demonstrated man's oneness with the Father, and for this we owe him endless homage."

The Master himself stated the great spiritual fact of his unity with God on more than one occasion, seeking thus to bring home to his followers what was equally true of their real spiritual selfhood, and to enlighten them as to the source of the power which he wielded so consistently in the overcoming of all manner of disease and sin. At one time he said to the Jews, "I and my Father are one;" at another, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do; for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise."

Christian Science makes it perfectly plain that Jesus possessed his power to heal because of the profound understanding he had of man's unity with God. He did nothing of himself; he simply reflected God; and this did the works. What a beautiful spirit was the Master's, the result of understanding, faith, humility, purity, love! It made him the chief friend of the human race, the greatest healer of mankind, the perfect Way-shower to God and His eternal truth, the Saviour of the world.
