I am so grateful for the wonderful light which Christian Science has thrown upon the Bible. From early childhood until graduation I had one hour of Bible study each day at school, following the Episcopalian religion; but as years passed, after a very deep sorrow I did not seem able to understand or apply my religion.
An acquaintance once spoke about the Bible, but I answered that in one part God commanded men to slay their enemies and in another we were told that "God is love." After becoming a student of Christian Science and having Christian Science treatment, and also reading a splendid testimony in the Christian Science Sentinel in which a lady stated that formerly she had not cared to read in the Bible about David slaying his enemies, I too found out, as this lady had, that the enemies God commands us to slay are those of unbelief, doubt, fear, envy, self-will, self-love, self-justification, and the like; and so I learned that the teachings of Mary Baker Eddy are founded on those of the beloved Master.
I am so grateful to have been the beneficiary of the noble lives of Christian Science practitioners, and to know that we are all the beneficiaries of the noble lives of Jesus the Christ and of our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy, I have been healed of neuralgia, of violent pain and an abscess in the roof of my mouth, of pain in one of my eyes which caused me great worry, of fainting spells, dizziness, grippe, deep grief, and limitation, and have received help instantly over the telephone and by reading the Bible and our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I was sustained by reading, and the work of a Christian Science practitioner, during situations in France and England, through the realization of the ever-presence of peace and love. My gratitude to God can never be expressed, because it is too deep, for being led to the practitioner who not only instantly helped me, but through spiritual unfoldment pointed the way to "higher ideals of life and its joys" (Science and Health, p. 299).
