In reply to a critic writing in your recent issue, let me...
North Middlesex Chronicle
In reply to a critic writing in your recent issue, let me say that he has completely missed the point of my letter. If he does not understand the difference between the Christ and Jesus, which Christian Science reveals, he will not be able to understand the following statements of our Master: "Before Abraham was, I am," and, "Now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was." The physical Jesus did not exist before his material birth; whereas the Christ, his spiritual selfhood, is eternal, without beginning and without end. Christ is the Son of God; Jesus was the son of man. Jesus, referring to his human body, said, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I [the spiritual Christ] will raise it up." Again, when Jesus asked his disciples, "Whom say ye that I am?" Peter's answer, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God," brought forth the statement, "Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven." It was through spiritual discernment that Peter recognized the Christ, the eternal Son of God.
Christian Scientists most certainly understand the Comforter, or spirit of Truth, to be Divine Science, for Christ Jesus said: "Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you." This is precisely what Christian Science is doing.
