Signs of the Times

[From the Boston Herald, Massachusetts]

Standing before a capacity congregation in Carnegie hall, Rabbi Stephen S. Wise of the free synagogue asserted that, contrary to what he had been led to believe in early life, Jesus of Nazareth was not a myth, but a man, and the Jews must embrace the teachings of Jesus. If Christianity is impractical and unattainable, as the Jews say it is, said Dr. Wise, then it is because the Christians have failed to live up to Jesus' teachings. He declared that these teachings comprise a code of ethics unparalleled in any writings in history, being the very foundations of morality. "Jesus was. I accept this despite the notion I had been led to believe earlier in my life—a notion that Jesus was a myth and never existed," Dr. Wise said. "I tell you, and I will repeat these words to every Jew in the world if need be, 'Jesus was;' and we must accept this fact at once."
