As a child I was never considered strong and was ill frequently, not only with some children's disease, but also with chills and fever, or ague; and often I suffered from severe colds and bronchitis, as well as catarrh and malarial fever. During young womanhood I was under the care of different physicians, but not receiving much help, took many bottles of patent medicines. After a severe attack of congestion of the lungs, many seemed to think I was tubercular.

During all these years there was a searching among different religions and churches for a spiritual uplifting and a better outlook on life. After the accidental death of a loved one, I was thrown into nervous prostration. Friends who were Christian Scientists came to me in my great need, with loving solace, and pointed the way to Christian Science. At that time I felt as if there was no God; for He would not let such calamities occur; and I was bitterly opposed to what I thought Christian Science to be. A friend, although a very young student in Christian Science, lent me her copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I had never seen the book before, although I had seen some Christian Science pamphlets and Sentinels. The testimonies in the Sentinels angered me; for I thought, How can any one be helped without medicine? And I threw them aside and would not read them. When Science and Health was offered me, I at first read it casually. Very soon, however, I became interested, and at last was persuaded to attend the Wednesday evening testimony meetings. Learning of the Reading Rooms, I went there to read Science and Health quite regularly, later purchasing a copy of the book for myself; and I was healed of nervous prostration while reading it.

Since then I have been healed of heart trouble and, instantaneously, of tonsillitis; also defective eyesight, for which I had worn glasses over twenty-two years, has been overcome, and I have not worn glasses for over three years. A badly sprained ankle was healed in two days through the reading of the Bible and Science and Health. The discoloration disappeared in about a week. I have been protected from automobile accidents by my slight understanding of God's care; also from hatred. As Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 571), "Clad in the panoply of Love, human hatred cannot reach you;" and on page 444 of the same book she states, "Step by step will those who trust Him find that 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.' "
