Ten years ago I was in Switzerland, where I became acquainted with Christian Science. On account of the war, in which my country, Bulgaria, was involved, I was forced to return home and serve as a reserve officer. For three years I not only had to go through the dangers of war, but also had to overcome many sicknesses. I should like to mention one case in particular.
In September, 1916, our division was encamped in Macedonia in the village of Comareto. I was suddenly taken ill with high fever, and suffered very severely from headaches, a cough, and constipation. I immediately began to work as taught in Christian Science, and thought my healing would soon come. Because the demonstration was slow, I grew impatient and weak, and consequently the error grew more vehement. Then I summoned together all my strength, and read and worked all night. The spiritual truth was just as clear to me that twice two is four and not five. I continued to work against the error, and my thoughts became clearer. The complaint gradually disappeared, but I was very weak.
When my colleagues entered my tent they thought I was dying, because I was so pale; and my superior officers ordered me to be moved to the military hospital. In this dangerous condition I wrote to a practitioner in Zurich for treatment. I refused to take the medicines the hospital prescribed. My condition grew worse, and I was taken to another hospital behind the front. The fever grew so much worse that there was a great deal of pain. The army surgeon diagnosed it as a very bad case of typhoid fever and malaria. I was moved to another hospital, and there they thought they could prolong my life with injections. A relative who saw me also thought I was dying. I was moved to still another hospital and taken to a room where only those patients were taken whose death was expected.
