In the recent primary campaign in your city, the religious question was raised between two candidates for the nomination for mayor; and, according to a report in a recent issue of your paper, the attitude of Christian Scientists toward the enforcement of health laws was misstated. Christian Scientists are law-abiding citizens; and, in order that the health laws of this state may be brought to their personal attention, a circular, entitled "The Observance of State Health Regulations," is issued by the Committee on Publication for Washington, for distribution to all the members of all the branch Christian Science churches and societies in this state. Regardless of any personal opinion, a Christian Scientist holding public office, intrusted with law enforcement, would not only continue to observe all the laws himself, but would give his careful attention to the strict enforcement of all health, as well as all other, laws of his community. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverere and Founder of Christian Science, writing on this subject, says on page 220 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany": "I believe in obeying the laws of the land. I practise and teach this obedience, since justice is the moral signification of law."
