The Light of Understanding

"This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all." In pondering this quotation from the first epistle of John, a student of Christian Science tried to realize what the value of light really is. She saw that without light little could be accomplished by mortals, that work, play, study, progress would be seriously impeded if not completely prevented.

The passage quoted above states that "God is light;" so it might be said that what light is to mortals God is to spiritual man. And if we could but learn that God does supply all the light or understanding we need in our work, in our play, in our study, we could not help but progress in every way.

We read in the first chapter of Genesis that in the beginning light was created by God and that He pronounced it good. Surely the light created by Mind must be spiritual understanding, which tells of the fatherhood of God, of His power to hold in safety His perfect creation, and which is adequate to dispel the darkness of mental ignorance, fear, and lack.
