Seven years ago I was under condemnation from a fatal medical prognosis. To-day I am free. Every medical law has been overcome by the truth. I came to Christian Science for healing; but my great need was mental and spiritual rather than physical. Both medicine and religion had proved as shifting sand when put to the test.

I constantly saw in my patients that it was the mental that dominated the physical and held it in bondage. The physical effects would disappear when the mental state was corrected. Then how could a patient rise above a fatal medical prognosis such as Bright's disease or cancer? Such conditions would, according to medical law, become progressively worse. The prognosis was worse than the disease. Thus, after ten years of practice, I found the science of medicine both contradictory and baffling.

About this time I turned to our minister, a person of national repute, and said to him, "Can't we prove our religion?" This question had been twenty years in crystallizing. The humiliation of it was a deep internal wound that would not heal. He said: "No, we cannot prove it now. We must accept it on faith. Perhaps, sometime." There seemed no foundation upon which to stand. I knew Jesus healed mentally, but a reading of the gospels afforded no light. I could see only as "through a glass, darkly."
