When Christian Science was first offered to me, I was...
When Christian Science was first offered to me, I was at a health resort for consumptives, suffering from what formerly was known as galloping consumption. Physicians offered me the rather vague hope that if I followed the so-called rest cure, I might ultimately be fortunate enough to live as a semi-invalid, provided I remained in high altitudes. I had already spent nine months in bed at this resort, following very closely the instructions of the specialist who attended me, but nevertheless the progress of the disease was not arrested, and the symptoms were becoming aggravated to an alarming degree. In addition to this, various complications had set in, among them a nervous stomach complaint, which had reached such a state that I was able to eat practically nothing. About this time my physician told me that he had tried everything in his power to relieve me, but without success. My condition seemed to have been reduced to a race between starvation and tuberculosis.
Then a kind friend sent me some one who was well qualified to bring me the "good tidings of good." I was in such a mental state that I would have been willing to try anything except a religion for healing, for I was firm believer in the teachings of one of the so-called orthodox churches. But there seemed to be no other hope for me; so, after a mental struggle of some two weeks, I decided to give Christian Science a fair trial for the healing of stomach trouble. I had absolutely no thought of trying it for my lungs. To my great surprise, my improvement began at once. My appetite became something to be marveled at; and after I had read a part of the Lesson-Sermon daily for ten days, my lungs improved to such an extent that I was able to get up from bed. As my understanding of Christian Science increased, so did my reliance on divine Principle, bringing with it an ever increasing manifestation of health. The results of Christian Science treatment have been put to some very severe tests, but I will mention only that one which was found most convincing by my family, no member of which, at that time, was partial to Christian Science.
About two and a half years after I began to rely on Christian Science, I found myself in France as a machine gunner with the American army during the late war. I think I can safely say that by that time I had seen as much front line service as the average American soldier, and in consequence had experienced the so-called hardships of poison gas, privation, exposure, forced marches, and so forth, which were supposed to have been the cause of such a large percentage of the pulonary tuberculosis among our soldiers. Nevertheless, a few days after receiving my honorable discharge, when examined for life insurance, not only did I have no trouble in passing the examination, but I was highly complimented by the examining physician for my splendid physical condition.
