It is with deepest gratitude that I write of the healing...
It is with deepest gratitude that I write of the healing that has come to me through Christian Science. Many years ago, while living in a mining camp in the Nevada desert, I was healed of typhoid fever through help lovingly given by a Christian Science practitioner in a distant state. While this healing was in progress I was enabled to go daily about my work in defiance of every law laid down by the medical profession concerning such cases. In connection with this healing came also the beginning of my release from the desire for tobacco, to which I had been much of a slave. Later, through a practitioner's help, this desire was overcome entirely.
One evening I was badly burned about the face and arms by an explosion of acetylene gas. Thought was turned at once to the reality taught by Christian Science. The Lord's Prayer, with its spiritual interpretation as given in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (pp. 16, 17) and "the scientific statement of being" (p. 468), were audibly repeated by my wife and me with an earnest desire to touch the hem of the garment of the eternal truth which therein finds expression; and very soon I was sleeping like a child with the sense of pain entirely gone. By midnight our request for help reached the Christian Science practitioner we had been seeking; and as a result of his aid there were no painful after effects from these burns, and no scars. Through Christian Science I have been healed of mental discords as well as physical ones; and many times in my financial affairs, when difficulties have loomed like a stone wall before me, I have had fresh proof that God has set before us, each one, an open door, which can never be closed.
I have great reason to be grateful to the Christian Science practitioners who have so patiently helped me, and to the one who made clear to me the necessity for working out my own salvation, even though it should be "with fear and trembling," instead of habitually asking for help from others in my times of need. It is my earnest desire to learn the obedience and the humility which alone can prove our gratitude for this wonderful message of Truth that Christian Science brings.
