One of the many ills I have been able to demonstrate...
One of the many ills I have been able to demonstrate over through the study and practice of Christian Science was a bad case of mental depression. I had been suffering from this some time when it finally seemed impossible for me to leave my bed. My agony increased with the hours, until I wished for death.
Prior to this time I had neglected Christian Science and apparently forgotten it. But we learn in Science that divine Mind, God, is ever present, and we have but to acknowledge that Presence to receive His blessings. I had been repeating "the scientific statement of being," as given in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 468), and finally was able to recognize the belief I was under and how untrue it was to the divine understanding. I asked a friend who was with me to hand me Science and Health, which I had had in my possession without use for some time. I read the chapter on "Animal Magnetism Unmasked." This brought me the understanding of how to acknowledge the supremacy of divine Mind, and it was only a matter of about twenty or thirty minutes before the spell was broken.
For several weeks afterward I was troubled with spasmodic returns of depression, so I consulted a practitioner, who was of much help to me when I became despondent. She helped me to recognize the truth, and so gave me renewed courage. After a week or so, with the unfolding of greater spiritual understanding, the difficulty gradually disappeared. We are told to work out our own salvation, and so we must; but sometimes while young in the teachings of Christian Science one may need aid from others in order to keep in the right light.
