The teachings of Christian Science are based on the Bible, and the proof that the healing works which are accomplished therein are the result of the same Principle which was operative in the healings wrought by Christ Jesus may be established by consideration of certain facts. Jesus said, "I can of mine own self do nothing;" "the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works," thus acknowledging that God was the cause or Principle involved in the results achieved. Christian Science teaches that God is infinite Spirit, Mind, or intelligence, and holds that the belief in the real existence of any human, carnal mind, which the Scriptures say "is enmity against God," dishonors God. Hence that which effects the healing in Christian Science is the divine Mind, God, and this fact not only identifies this system with that utilized by Christ Jesus and his followers, but distinguishes it from all other so-called mental healing systems. It is therefore very proper that the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, should be mentioned together. Every earnest student of Christian Science knows that this textbook not only elucidates and correctly interprets the Bible, but he also has the satisfaction of knowing that, through this mental illumination, he is enabled, in his own experience, to effect the healing of sin of diseases, for did not Jesus say, "He that believeth on [understandeth] me, the works that I do shall he do also"? It is obvious that a mere acceptance of the contents of the Bible is insufficient to enable one to prove the truth of being which is revealed therein. The Bible writings were the result of inspiration, and inspired thought alone is capable of understanding them. An earnest study of the Christian Science textbook purifies, uplifts, and spiritualizes thought, and the student gradually realizes that he has indeed found that which he was seeking, namely, the "Key to the Scriptures." Through Christian Science, many who formerly took little or no interest in the Bible have been impelled to turn to it and to find within its pages the truth about God, who "healeth all thy diseases," and this is cause for deep gratitude. Your correspondent has been misinformed as to the value of Mrs. Eddy's estate, almost the whole of which was left to The Mother Church in Boston for advancing the Cause of Christian Science, which clearly proves the purity and sincerity of her motives.
