Modern View

In a recent issue of your journal, which is always read in this office with much enjoyment, appeared an article on "Jewish Science," by "Emes," in which there is a misleading reference to Christian Science. The statement to which I allude would give the reader the impression that Christian Science treatment consists in "the mere repetition of a formula." The phrases "verbal medicine" and "a spiritual opiate" are also used in this connection. I feel sure you will give me the privilege of your columns, to say that the healing work of Christian Science is not accomplished through the repetition of a formula. Truth, and not "the mumbling of meaningless words," is its medicine; nor does it lull to sensuous dullness. The healing prayer of Christian Science is spiritual communion with the one living and true God, of whose care for His children we learn in the Hebrew Scriptures as well as in the spiritual writings named "Christian," which have their root in the first named. It awakens to righteousness and to unselfed love for God and man. It sounds anew to humanity the clarion call of Isaiah: "Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee." The use of formulas in Christian Science treatment is absolutely forbidden by the rules of the Christian Science church. On page 452 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes: "Except to heal simply by repeating the author's words, by right talking and wrong acting, and you will be disappointed. Such a practice does not demonstrate the Science by which divine Mind heals the sick."
