Signs of the Times

[From the Tribune, Chicago, Illinois, Feb. 21, 1925]

In a unique talk on religion and character before the famous Vaughan Bible class of Calvary Baptist Church, former Secretary of State Hughes warned against any dogma which sets bounds to man's inquiry or denies his reason. Mr. Hughes formerly taught this class. "Any institution organization, any cult or system, which tries to bind the restless spirit of man, to set bounds to his curious searchings, to deny the reports of his reason, cannot last," Mr. Hughes said. "What does the Christian character or balanced life mean? It is this: Faith without credulity; conviction without bigotry; charity without condescension; courage without pugnacity; self-respect without vanity; humility without obsequiousness; love of humanity wihout sentimentality, and meekness with power. That is our ideal."
