Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, teaches clearly that animal magnetism is a product of mortal mind, or of what Paul terms the "carnal mind;" that it has no value whatever as a curative agent; and that, as in the case of hypnotism, any effect seemingly produced by it can only be the effect of illusion. Moreover, she states on page 101 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" that "its effects upon those who practise it, and upon their subjects who do not resist it, lead to moral and to physical death." Having thus unmasked animal magnetism, Mrs. Eddy lifts her reader out of the whole welter of material beliefs with the statement (p. 102): "There is but one real attraction, that of Spirit. The pointing of the needle to the pole symbolizes this all-embracing power or the attraction of God, divine Mind."
