[Written for the Sentinel]

I Learned to Sing

I learned to sing when shadows fell
And days grew dark and drear;
For though I made my bed in hell,
God's tender love was near.

I learned to sing when tasks increased
And heavier grew each day;
Love, merciful, prepared a feast
My famished sense to stay.

I learned to sing when error's horde
Advanced in fearful throng.
What foe could pass Truth's trusty sword,
Or stand before a song?

I learned to sing! Oh, Love divine,
Fill me anew each hour!
When song wells up, no other sign
I need to know Thy power.
