I wish to express my gratitude for the many blessings...

I wish to express my gratitude for the many blessings that have come to me through Christian Science. From a sense of ill health and dependence upon others, together with selfish absorption in the work that seemed to me most interesting, thought has been changed to a larger outlook, health has been restored, and a desire to be of service to others has taken the place of the old self-centered view of life.

Christian Science was first brought to my attention through the healing of a friend of insomnia. At that time I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown and had for some time been unable to sleep normally. When my friend told me of her healing I was greatly impressed, and feeling that no harm, at least, could result from a system of healing called Christian, I had no hesitation about asking for help from the one Christian Scientist of whom we had then heard. To my great joy I found that in a very short time I was not only sleeping regularly at night but going on happily each day with the work which had before seemed a burden; and as I began to realize that unconsciousness was not a necessity, the fear of being unable to go on with the work I had undertaken disappeared.

I had purchased a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and took pleasure in reading it and in discussing its beautiful philosophy with my friend; but I did not then realize that, like any textbook, one must study it in order to gain any real benefit from its teachings, and so, after a time, other interests crowded out of thought the very little I had been able to grasp of the healing truth. It was not wholly forgotten, however; and when, after many years of ill health, arrangements were made for a home in the vicinity of Boston, I remembered that it was there Mrs. Eddy had established her church, and I began to look forward to learning more of Christian Science. And here, after I had experienced a period of severe illness, once more a kind friend came to tell me of her healing through Christian Science treatment, and advised me to go to a practitioner. I did so at once; and after listening to the comforting words of this loving and consecrated Christian Scientist, I was ready to drop all dependence upon other systems and to begin "at the numeration-table of Christian Science" (Science and Health, p. 326). The physical healing was slow, and for this I have been grateful; for I thus saw the need of more faithful study of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, and through it I gained a better understanding of God as the only Mind, governing all, and was constantly helped to overcome many errors in thought and temperament.
