Obedience

STUDENTS of Christian Science undoubtedly ponder more than do any other class of people the meaning of the word "obedience," and appreciate the beautiful promises made throughout the Scriptures to those who obey. Indeed, obedience is basic in the teachings of both our Master, Christ Jesus, and our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.

In Hebrews we read concerning Jesus, "Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; and being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him." That is to say, through his obedience to the divine will, "being made perfect," Jesus proved man to be the perfect likeness of our Father-Mother God. By this demonstration of man's perfection he was able to give to us that commandment which has become the standard of every earnest Christian Scientist, namely, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."

What greater thing can we ever hope for than the realization of perfection, even that state of harmony in which sin, disease, and death are unknown? Furthermore, did not our Lord make it perfectly clear that we cannot claim obedience to divine Principle, Spirit, so long as we are willing to obey the so-called laws of supposititious matter or mortal mind? Again, was not the necessity of obedience to divine law brought out in unmistakable language by Paul, when he wrote to the Romans, "Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?"
