"There is no fear in love"
In the light of the understanding of God which Christian Science gives, the words of John in his first epistle, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear," are extraordinarily significant. It is true that the apostle, beloved of the Master, states, likewise in his first epistle, that "God is love;" but never until Christian Science came with its message of God's allness, and emphasized, in a manner never before attempted, that divine Love exists to the total exclusion of all unlike itself, was the fact appreciated as it should have been. Now a great multitude over all the earth are rejoicing in the knowledge of the truth, and demonstrating it in some degree in their daily lives.
God is Love. What a thought—that the creator of the universe, the creator of man, is Love, infinite Love! How feebly we seem to realize the meaning of the words, even in our most inspired moments! But this is certain, that when thought is most spiritual we realize most clearly the profundity of the truth that God is Love. On page 2 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes, "God is Love." And then she straightway puts the question, "Can we ask Him to be more?"
Can we ask God to be more than Love? It is impossible; since divine Love includes within itself all reality—all that is lovable, true, beautiful, enduring, substantial, all that is good. If God were not infinite Love, without a trace of the opposite in His nature, the universe would be doomed. If a scintilla of evil (so called) existed in God—that is to say, if the least trace of evil were a reality,—creation would be without an eternal or permanent foundation and would be liable to extinction at any moment. But, as Christian Science affirms so positively, God is perfect Love; and therefore His own creation is perfectly upheld.
